Now that most people have had enough time to finish the gorgeous Silent Hill 2 remake, Bloober Team announced their newest foray into horror territory. I’m talking about Cronos: The New Dawn, which was just been revealed at the Xbox showcase.
The reveal consisted only of a cinematic trailer, but we already know a bit of what to expect.
Cronos will be a new survival horror IP, which seems to fall in line with Bloober’s previous statement on abandoning the psychological horror genre. Cronos takes place after “the change”, a cataclysmic event that turned a large part of the world’s population into vile monstrosities. We play as a “Traveler”, an agent looking for time rifts that allow him to go back in time to the ’80s. Once there, the Traveler will use his peculiar device, the “harvester”, to extract the essence of key people who died in the Apocalypse, and bring them to the present in some capacity.
I’m not keen on showcases featuring no gameplay, but I must admit I enjoyed the vibes on display. Cronos seems to put players in the shoes of a mysterious enforcer who has to deal with undead-like monstrosities and, apparently, old ladies in a post-apocalyptic Eastern European setting. Only one part of what I just mentioned sounds original — and in a weird way — but there’s a neat twist. The “Traveler”, this guy, or thing we play as, looks way scarier than any of the enemies shown in the trailer. The Traveler looks like a cross between a regular astronaut and the Pyramid Head, which does seem to make a lot of sense for Bloober — and I’m all here for it.
Will Cronos continue Bloober’s hot streak? Stay tuned to find out as it releases on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2025.
