Recently at BlizzCon, World of Warcraft director Jeffrey Kaplan gently hinted at the possibility that Blizzard could be developing a console MMO not named World of Warcraft. In an interview, Kaplan told MTV Multiplayer that WoW couldn’t work on a console, but said that the boys at Blizzard acquisition Swingin’ Ape know their way around next-generation consoles.
From the interview:
… I don’t think ‘World of Warcraft’ would really work that well on the console, but that’s not to say that other MMOs couldn’t. And we have a pretty savvy group of console developers — a lot of the guys we inherited from Swingin’ Ape really know what they’re doing on next-gen consoles. So we might have a few tricks up our sleeves in that regard.
Kaplan is speaking in a World of Warcraft context, so it’s probably not too far off base to suppose that this hinted at title could be some sort of collective experience like an MMO. Hopefully, the title will be built from the ground up for consoles so we don’t have to hear the “left mouse button doesn’t translate to ‘X’ very well” rhetoric that we’ve been exposed to thus far in conversations about Diablo 3.
What do you guys want? Do you think Blizzard is capable of producing a decent console game?
