Spore creator and well loved design icon Will Wright has become the latest industry figure to criticize E3, naming it “the walking dead” and suggesting that the “real” E3 died years ago.

“It almost feels like a zombie at this point; it’s the walking dead,” stated the game designer. “It’s such an abrupt end to what was E3, which had been this huge escalating arms race.

“I understand why they really pulled the plug on the big E3. Looking at the amount of money a company like EA would spend on it, it was ridiculous amounts of money just to be present and competitive with everyone else, so I think they were looking for a way to sign the arms treaty and de-escalate the whole thing.”

Wright then suggested we were in a “weird transition period” of wondering whether or not we have a show anymore since the real E3 passed on. Really, E3 needs to go away but the sole reason it has so much attention heaped on it is because it’s based in America. There are bigger, better shows out there that don’t have half the coverage because they’re not American. Every year, however, it will get the same amount of coverage and people will still be complain that it’s a big disappointment.
