It was approximately forever ago that Ubisoft announced Skull and Bones, initially said to be something of a follow-up to the fantastic piracy found in 2013’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. But while it was initially announced for Xbox One and PS4, is it still going to be released on those console.
No. Skull and Bones is only coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as PC.
To be clear, Ubisoft hasn’t made an announcement, but somewhere down the line, they stopped saying it was coming to those platforms in both their press and public statements. While this leaves some room for correction, it’s a pretty clear sign that they’ve dropped those platforms.
It’s also not really surprising. In 2017, the PS4 and Xbox One were still in their prime, and the next generation was still not officially announced, but years later, things have shifted significantly. While plenty of new titles still support last-gen consoles, those releases are getting more and more rare, especially when it comes to big budget releases.
I’ve lost track of how many times Skull and Bones was delayed, and it dropped off my radar a long time ago. It’s supposedly mainly focused on a single-player campaign, but there is PVP multi-player and that may or may not be set up to be a live service kind of deal.
We’ll find out for sure when Skull and Bones is finally released on February 16, 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC if it doesn’t get delayed again. However, it’s not coming to PS4 and Xbox One.
