Remnant 2 contains far more theory-crafting opportunities than its predecessor, which can lead to a bad case of analysis paralysis (“what do I pick?!”). Here’s how to get a handle on things very early on, right after you complete the tutorial and gain the opportunity to apply your first trait (passive buff).
Vigor is an easy choice if you’re bored or confused
Starting out, you’ll be able to choose from the following traits after entering the Ward 13 hub zone:
- Vigor (Increases max health – +3 at level 1)
- Endurance (Increases max stamina – +3 at level 1 )
- Spirit (Increases mod power generation – 2% at level 1)
- Expertise (Reduces skill cooldowns – minus 2% at level 1)
We recommend that you start with Vigor. Vigor is the core passive upgrade, as you’ll always need health to survive, and you don’t need to actively make use of it. Once you’ve picked up the ins and outs of the game, observed some enemy/boss patterns, and become a master of dodging, Vigor is arguably less important. But as you’re starting out, you want a bit of extra health padding so you can make it further into the game’s worlds and depths.
To be clear, none of the starting traits are poor choices. Endurance governs your stamina meter (which you need to manually trigger through skills like dodging or sprinting). Expertise (like Spirit) is a great trait to pick up later, as you won’t have many cooldowns to work with as you’re just starting out (plus, they aren’t nearly as game-changing or impactful).
You’ll also pick up more traits after acquiring your first archetype (right in Ward 13), so you can always save them and not spend anything. Player’s choice!
Don’t worry, you can respec (change your traits) in Remnant 2
Don’t stress about “choosing the wrong trait.” It’s actually impossible! Not only will every trait help you in the long run (especially early on), but you can also “respec” in Remnant 2, which will allow you to re-specialize and re-distribute your stats. That includes traits.
To do so, you’ll need to buy an “Orb of Undoing” from the NPC Wallace, located in the main hub of Ward 13. Wallace is actually a key character, as you’re required to speak to him to pick your first archetype (class). If you need help finding him, we have a full location guide here.
It’ll cost you 2500 Scrap and x3 Lumenite Crystals to buy the orb, which you can then use to respec your character.
