What is a barebones kill in Modern Warfare 3?

Barebones kills have nothing to do with playing as a default skin.

Challenges in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are required for everything. Weapon challenges, camo challenges, weekly and daily challenges, they’re a massive part of the game. One challenge, in particular, getting barebones kills on enemy operators, is a bit confusing.

What is a barebones kill?

A barebones kill requires getting a kill using a weapon without any attachments. In the case of the current weekly challenge, the weapon is the Haymaker shotgun. In short, all you need to do is equip the Haymaker on a class, but don’t choose any attachments. The Week 3 weekly challenge requires you to earn 30 kills using the barebones Haymaker. Completing five challenges from week 3 gets you a new Conversion Kit for the Haymaker.

Fortunately, shotguns aren’t too bad without attachments, as opposed to some other weapon classes. We’d recommend using Double Time and other speed and movement-enhancing perks along with a couple of stun grenades. This will make it easy to get close enough to one-or-two-shot most enemies, even without adding any attachments to the Haymaker.

While you can’t use attachments, like a larger magazine or a silencer, on your Haymaker shotgun for the barebones challenge, you can still come well-equipped. Completing this challenge is much easier with the right perks and equipment.

Best vest – Infantry or Gunner vest. An Infantry vest will increase tac sprint duration and reduce refresh time, allowing you to sprint further and more often. A Gunner vest grants max ammo when you spawn along with improved reload speed. This is vital to getting those Haymaker kills, as you’ll need all the ammo you can get.

Best gloves – Scavenger or Commando gloves. Scavenger gloves allow you to resupply ammo and throwing knives from dead players. Again, ensure you’re always ready to get those barebones Haymaker kills. Commando gloves let you reload while sprinting. Shotguns tend to take a few extra seconds to reload, and missing a shot or two will hang you out to dry. Running away and reloading is the difference between life and death.

Best boots – Lightweight, Running, or Stalker boots. Lightweight boots increase movement and swim speed so it’s easier to get in close. Running sneakers increase tac sprint duration and reduce refresh time (only use these if you’re not using the Infantry vest). Finally, the Stalker boots increase strafe and ADS movement speed, which is perfect for aiming and moving around with a barebones shotgun.

Best gear – For gear, there are many options you’ll find very useful, it just depends on your playstyle. For example, the Blacklight Flashlight shows you enemy footsteps, which is perfect for high-tailing it behind enemy lines and locating free kills. Another option is the Mag Holster, which improves reload speed. Additionally, Ghost T/V Camo can come in clutch for hiding you from UAVs and enemy radar sources while moving. However, since your Haymaker is barebones, you’ll still show up on radar whenever you pull the trigger.

Equipment – We’d recommend coming equipped with either Stuns or Flash grenades. These make it much easier to get in close to opponents, especially ones who have already spotted you from a distance. Additionally, throwing knives can be useful, especially if you miss a few shots or need to reload. If you’re out of bullets, a throwing knife is a quick way to get an elimination and save your life.

Completing the latest weekly challenges won’t be too difficult for most players. Many are straightforward as long as you’re using the right weapons. The same goes for barebones kills. They’re as easy to earn as equipping the Haymaker shotgun and playing the game, so you’ll have your new JAK Maglift kit in no time!
