We’ve all seen FATEs while exploring the Realms of Eorzea and beyond, but what are Shared FATEs and Bicolored Gemstones? More importantly, what are the rewards you can exchange these pretty gems for? Here’s what you need to know.
What is a FATE?
By the time you unlock Shared FATEs in Shadowbringers, you should have a pretty clear idea of what a FATE is. But just in case, here’s a quick rundown.
A FATE (Full Active Time Event) is a random event that occurs in overworld areas throughout FFXIV. They are shown on the map by a purple circle and can be split into four categories (not including Special FATEs):
- Notorious Monster – One enemy with a large amount of health
- Slay Enemies – Trash mob waves with normal amounts of health
- Gather – Gather supplies and hand-in to NPC
- Defense – Protect NPCs or objects from incoming waves of enemies
It is possible to complete FATEs solo, though they are easier and much faster with a group. You receive a medal based upon your individual contribution towards the success (or failure) of the FATE. These medals are equivalent to ratings; Gold medals are the highest rating for completing a FATE, then Silver and Bronze, depending on your contribution.
When joining a FATE, you will be level-synced to meet the level of the FATE. If you join a FATE that has a higher level than you, your contributions won’t be weighed as heavily.
Of course, FATEs are an excellent way to level jobs, as they provide a decent chunk of EXP upon completion.
How Shared FATEs work in FFXIV
Shared FATEs track the number of FATEs you’ve completed in the regions of Shadowbringers and Endwalker. When you increase your rank within a zone, you unlock new unique items which can be purchased using Bicolor Gemstones. Only FATEs completed with the highest rating possible – a Gold medal – count towards your Shared FATEs progress.
To view your progress towards Shared FATEs, open up the Travel menu and select “Shared FATE” from the list. You can also add this window to your hotbar for ease of access.
There are three ranks per region and each rank unlocks after successful completion of a fixed number of FATEs:
- Rank 1 unlocks automatically when you unlock a zone
- Rank 2 is unlocked after successful completion of six FATEs within a zone
- Rank 3 requires 60 successfully completed FATEs within a zone
To complete Rank 3 in a zone, you must complete 66 FATEs in the area with a Gold metal rating. To successfully reach Rank 3 in all regions of Shadowbringers and Endwalker, you’ll need to complete 396 FATEs in each expansion.
Completion of Rank 3 within an area will reward the achievement of “Free Market Friend: (Region name)”. Completion of Rank 3 in all areas will reward the achievement of “Merchant’s Best Friend” in Shadowbringers and “Far Trade” in Endwalker.
Bicolor Gemstone rewards
You’ll earn Bicolor Gemstones for completing FATEs in Endwalker and Shadowbringers regions. The maximum number of Gemstones you can earn per FATE is 14 and they cap out once you’ve collected 1,000 of them, so make sure to exchange them by visiting a Gemstone Trader.
Each Gemstone Trader has unique rewards which become available as you increase your rank within their zone. Most notably, you can earn Riding Maps in each respective zone this way, which increases the speed of your mount. You can purchase a plethora of Orchestrion Rolls with Bicolor Gemstones as well.
In short, keep completing FATEs in every zone until you earn everything that interests you. For a more detailed breakdown of what you can earn via Shared FATEs, check out our Endwalker Shared FATEs guide here.
