Wait, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has multiplayer?

I’ve found it really encouraging that developers are willing to make their multiplayer games playable after the shutdown of GameSpy. There was quite a list of games that were going to be going offline but after some big names started the ball rolling, we’ve now got updates for Unreal Tournament 3 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Epic Games has posted a user-created fix that allows multiplayer to continue unabated for UT3, which is still a popular title on Steam. It is in the form of an .exe file, so you’ll have to fiddle about in your drives but y’all should be able to handle that no sweat (Steam auto updates have caused me to go soft in my old age).

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has received a patch to help keep its online mode active as well. My response, like many others, was “S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has online?” What’s weirder is that the original developer GSC Gameworld is now defunt. Still, it’s heartening to see developers take some care over their older games as it would be easy to just let the multiplayer experience remain lost.
