A triple-A Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG is now in the works from World War Z developer Saber Interactive and Paramount Game Studios. It will take place thousands of years in the past before the animated show with a completely new story in the universe.
This game will have us play as an all-new, never-before-seen Avatar from a long time ago. The press release says to expect “dynamic combat alongside companions” as we master all four elements and get “immersed in a vibrant world.”
Not the best track record so far
For much of Avatar: The Last Airbender’s history, the video games have soured many fans. Even the famed Bayonetta developer Platinum Games tried its hand at the series, but its 2014 interpretation of The Legend of Korra failed to impress. Now, Avatar Studios is stepping in and will be in close collaboration with Saber Interactive, which has previously developed some successful IP-based titles. That includes the multiplayer World War Z and, most recently, the critically acclaimed Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. “The story and lore on show in the campaign are a great reason to get this game alone, and everything else is just a giant, Battle Barge-sized cherry on top,” said Jamie Moorcroft-Sharp’s Space Marine 2 review.
“We know loyal fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been eager for more stories that bring them into the universe of the show, and through gaming, we’re able to expand the world-building and allow fans to experience the new content in a completely immersive way,” said Doug Rosen, SVP, Games and Emerging Media at Paramount. “Saber Interactive has a proven track record in bringing IP-based games to life, and we are excited to co-fund this AAA title alongside them and let fans experience this world first-hand.”
A few fans aren’t too thrilled with the idea, however. “I don’t think anyone would want to play an Avatar game where we don’t get to use Aang,” said a user on X. “Good luck on that but it won’t break the market,” said another comment with over 200 likes in response to DiscussingFilm‘s reporting.
No release date or platforms (other than PC) have been announced for the Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG yet. It doesn’t even have a name.
