With Grand Theft Auto V stealing headlines and dominating conversation this week, Saints Row: The Third has to fight twice as hard for attention. Nevertheless, THQ isn’t worried by Rockstar’s megaton game, and doesn’t believe Saints Row is at risk.
“I went online like everyone else to see the GTA trailer,” said CEO Brian Farrell during an investor call. “It’s a high-quality trailer and I think it’s going to be another fantastic game in the series.
“That said, it shows the completely different positioning of the two games. GTA is still serious and character-driven – a very different experience. Saints Row — if you saw our video today, it shows you all the crazy stuff in the game. It’s a totally different positioning, and if you read the forums it’s like: ‘Hey, I love GTA, and I love this game because it’s a very different game that knows what it is and is very entertaining’.”
Farrell is absolutely right, and it’s something I said myself yesterday. Years ago, these games could call themselves competitors, but they’ve gone in such wildly different directions that comparing them has become incredibly difficult now. They are very unique games with very distinct properties. Nobody should be worried at all.
