Fool’s Theory will remake the first Witcher game
CD Projekt has revealed one of their previously teased projects as a full-fledged remake of the first The Witcher game.
The remake, previously dubbed Project Canis Majoris, is in the early stages of development at Fool’s Theory, a third-party studio. The team is working on the remake in Unreal Engine 5, with creative supervision from CD Projekt Red, and is using the same tool set as the new Witcher trilogy that’s in the works.
Fool’s Theory was formed in 2015 by former Witcher developers, so it’s a bit of a natural fit. CD Projekt Red head Adam Badowski said the team at Fool’s Theory knows the source material well, and how to make “incredible and ambitious” games.
“The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt Red,” said Badowski. “It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger.”
Return to the source
The first The Witcher game stretches back pretty far, first launching in 2007 for the PC. Having personally played a chunk of it, it certainly has some cool ideas, but isn’t really the series that it would grow into with its sequels.
A rermake of the original certainly seems like an intriguing prospect. No more details were shared today on when this might arrive. But hearing it will also utilize the tools for the next Witcher trilogy is interesting.
There’s more in development at CD Projekt, too. The aforementioned new trilogy for The Witcher is one part, as is a new Witcher project from The Molasses Flood. And on the more futuristic side of things, CD Projekt is also working on the follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077.
