16 squads duke it out in a battle royale

We recently learned that Firestorm, Battlefield V‘s take on battle royale, will pit 16 squads against each other on the series’ “biggest” map to date. We know that a ring of fire slowly pushes players closer together. We also know that tanks are present, something the genre hasn’t seem much of yet. In a blog post, DICE reiterated these points and opened up about a few more details today.

In a very Battlefield touch, Firestorm will have several types of objectives. “These will operate similar to those found in the iconic Conquest mode, except some will be found at fixed locations and some at random, with varying types of supplies, weapons, and vehicles.” Since you’ll drop in without a weapon loadout, scavenging for loot and playing the objectives as a well-oiled machine will be crucial.

DICE has also stated that “matches are tied to your Company and Battlefield V progression.”

As we hear more about Firestorm, it’s clear to me that this won’t feel like any other battle royale experience out there. I’m not sure if that’s going to be a good or bad thing, but I’m super curious to see how it plays. Battlefield V really puts pressure on players to work together as a squad given how limited ammo is, and in Firestorm, squad play is a straight up requirement. I need to see this in action.
