The Standee system in Super Mario Bros. Wonder adds a subtle, yet helpful multiplayer component. By placing Standees in each level, you can point out secrets for other players or give them a free revive point in tricky sections. There are 144 different Standees that you can collect, but actually getting them all is surprisingly tricky.
To get all the Standees in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, you’ll have to buy them from Poplin Shops. By default, you can spent 10 Flower Coins to purchase a random standee. While you’ll rack up Standees quick this way, you can get repeat Standees, which functionally means you’ve wasted those 10 Flower Coins. However, if you explore and uncover more secrets in the game, you’ll eventually find a special Standee Shop. This vendor will sell you guaranteed new Standees, but at the cost of 30 Flower Coins each. You’ll want to utilize both these options to complete your collection.
At what point should you spend the extra cash on the guaranteed Standees? This, actually, is a surprisingly complex question. To answer that, we’ll need to do a bit of math and analyze the progression of the game itself.
When should you buy guaranteed Standees instead of random ones in Super Mario Bros. Wonder?
To state the obvious, you’ll want to buy random standees when you’re starting your collection. Because a guaranteed Standee costs three times as much money as random ones, you’ll come out ahead even if you get duplicates every other purchase.
It’s only once you’ve built up your collection that you’ll need to think about buying guaranteed Standees. Your risk of earning a duplicate will go up with each Standee you get, so there technically isn’t a best point to switch over from random to guaranteed purchases. Those who want to press their luck could keep buying random Standees until they have 110, and only switch over to guaranteed purchases once the odds are really against them. However, there’s one other factor to consider.
I personally recommend switching from random standees to guaranteed standees once you have around 92 Standees in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. While your risk isn’t quite so high at this point, anyone aiming for 100% completion will be consistently collecting 10-Flower Coins in each stage. Unless you’ve been spending a lot of Flower Coins on extra lives, you’ll have enough money to max out your Badge and Standee collections with cash to spare. In other words, while you could press your luck further than this, you really don’t need to. There’s nothing to spend your coins on after this, aside from extra lives.
The best way to get Flower Coins in Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Even if you do find yourself short on Flower Coins, you can always replay Bonus: Coins Galore stages after you beat the game for easy money. You can find these stages in the following locations once you’ve unlocked them.
- World 1 by “Bulrush Coming Through!”
- World 2 by “Pokipede Pass”
- World 4 by the Poplin shop
Equip the Coin Magnet Badge, and you should score approximately 54 Flower Coins per run. These stages respawn periodically, so make sure to run these whenever you get a chance. You’ll easily have enough money to buy everything in the game this way!
