Hey, remember that Boba Fett movie that was apparently in the works by Logan director James Mangold? It’s okay if you haven’t because it doesn’t sound like it’s happening anymore. According to Deadline, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that the project is no longer happening, with the studio focusing attention on streaming television show The Mandalorian instead.

Deadline also states that Mangold is no longer attached to such a Boba Fett project, with the director working on post-production for Ford vs. Ferrari, a film starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon about the rivalry between the two car manufacturers. Meanwhile, The Mandalorian, created by Jon Favreau, is fully in production, with a number of familiar names serving as directors for the episodes, including Bryce Dallas Howard, Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do in the Shadows), Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), and Deborah Chow (The High Cost of Living).

The Boba Fett movie probably wouldn’t have worked out, with it possibly encroaching on the territory of the television show (Fett is a clone of Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett) and the lukewarm reception to Solo. Still, Mangold has a pretty tight grasp of what makes for an entertaining western film, so this was one of Lucasfilm’s various projects that I believe could have worked.

At least Star Wars does appear to be slowing down, even just a little bit. As opposed to The Mandalorian, which will take place after Return of the Jedi and before The Force Awakens, I bet this Boba Fett movie would have been another pre-original trilogy prequel—those are rarely fun. Instead, I’m going to think back to these young adult books that I read as a child, about young Boba Fett coming of age and living independently post-Attack of the Clones. Now that was the shit.

Be sure to check out our thoughts on Kathleen Kennedy’s contract extension right here, as it is very relevant to the future of this franchise.
