Your mileage may vary on ‘classics’
Publisher Taito and the retro enthusiasts over at Hamster Corporation have come together to release a new compilation for Nintendo Switch: Taito Milestones. This release will pack together a selection of hits from the formative years of Taito, an era where the studio ruled the roost in the arcades by offering up a catalog of fun and incredibly varied coin-ops.
Taito Milestones will feature 10 games in all, though it has to be said that it’s hardly a “Very Best Of” collection here. While nobody would deny that The Ninja Warriors and The Fairyland Story are both fun to play even today, I’m not entirely sure how integral it is that we get yet another rerelease of games such as Front Line, Alpine Ski, and Wild Western. I understand that the collection represents genre-defining “milestones,” but I think the people would much rather have a port of the excellent PS2/Xbox volumes Taito Legends, which featured a slew of genuinely exciting smash hits.
Regardless, Taito Milestones will launch on Nintendo Switch in Japan on February 24, 2022. A western release is already confirmed, although a release date has not been set. A physical release will be made available via Strictly Limited Games.
