This does not apply to the free trial
Final Fantasy XIV introduced a tantalizing precedent when Heavensward became free for all players to enjoy. If that critically acclaimed expansion can be given away, then surely Stormblood is on the table as well. Now, approximately two and a half years after the famously revamped trial launched, Stormblood is finally free… kind of.
Until May 8th, owners of the Final Fantasy XIV Starter Edition can add Stormblood to their account at no charge. As a reminder, Starter Edition typically contains the same content as the trial. The trial restrictions are lifted, but a subscription is required to play. Fortunately, there is no expiration date on Stormblood once you own it. You’ll be able to enjoy it after May 8th if you choose to participate in this promotion.
For a limited time, existing owners or purchasers of #FFXIV Starter Edition can add the Stormblood expansion to their account for free! 🎮 https://t.co/gSQ9z04uRo

For Ala Mhigo!
This giveaway comes alongside a Free Login Campaign, allowing lapsed players to play Final Fantasy XIV for four days from now until May 8th. It should be noted that Heavensward received similar promotions such as this before it became permanently bundled with the free trial. Does this mean Stormblood will also come to the free trial at some point? Some players speculate that it does, but for now, I’d say don’t get your hopes up. There’s already an enormous amount of content in the trial, so Square Enix could decide to maintain that status quo for as long as it can.
In the meantime, this promotion is in a bit of an awkward place. It’s a nice gift for current Starter Edition owners, and this could be a decent way for trial players to experience new content at a lower price. That said, if you’re going to pay a subscription fee, it almost seems like a waste to ignore the excellent Shadowbringers and Endwalker expansions. Starter Edition isn’t a bad value, it’s just important to know what you’re getting into. Remember, once you upgrade from the free trial, you can’t return to your status as a free player.
Final Fantasy XIV is available on PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
