Steam headed for Linux, penguins reportedly delighted

After Steam’s fairly recent launch on Mac systems, it did seem obvious that it would only be a matter of time before the platform would find its way onto Linux. Recently, Linux blogger Michael Larabel has been over to Valve’s HQ to consult with the staff there into making Steam’s appearance on Linux a reality.

Larabel seems suitably impressed with what Valve have working right now, including seeing Left 4 Dead 2 running on the Linux OS Ubuntu: “I am still struck by just how interested Valve is in Linux as a platform; it is certainly beyond my original expectations. This Linux work just is not some half-assed attempt by them to make it look like they are a Linux-friendly organization.”

With stats from recent Humble Indie Bundles showing that there’s a big chunk of Linux gamers out there, Steam’s arrival can only be a good thing. It’ll mean more games sold and hopefully open up a new market to developers, especially indie devs who need as many sales as possible.
