Suit up and do your part
Cult-classic film Starship Troopers is getting a new video game adaptation that puts your boots on the ground and closer to the action. Starship Troopers: Extermination is a new squad-based co-op FPS, aiming for Early Access on PC in 2023.
Extermination is in the works at Offworld Industries, the developer behind other shooters like Squad and Beyond the Wire. With Starship Troopers: Extermination, the studio is turning the classic sci-fi movie into a 12-player co-op shooter. It’s got bases, resources, and a whole lotta bugs.
Players pick from three different classes (Assault, Support, Defense) to cater towards their playstyle. With a base on the ground, the Troopers will need to fight against waves of Arachnids. Completing objectives, acquiring resources, building a base, and then extracting together is the name of the game.
Battles take place on big maps, with objectives to retake bases, destroy hives, and fight for the planet against the Arachnids. Several types of bugs are in store for Early Access, from Drones and Gunners to much more dangerous foes. Along the way, you pick up progression for you class, getting new weapons, equipment, and perks to help you fight off the Arachnid horde.
Squashing some bugs
Starship Troopers, based on the novel of the same name, became a bit of a classic in the late ’90s. And funny enough, its satire and gung-ho space marines approach does make for a good framework for a video game.
Not only has Starship Troopers seen its own video game adaptations, with some degree of acclaim, but it’s been the inspiration for others too. Look no further than the co-op shooter Helldivers for a clear example.
If Starship Troopers: Extermination can also thread the needle, it might be worth keeping an eye on. Either way, it looks like it’ll have plenty of progression to tally up and bugs to blast. It’s headed for Steam Early Access on PC sometime in 2023.
