As you’re completing missions for Constellation, you’ll eventually be tasked with traveling to Bessel III-A and Freya III. You might find your progress halted at this point if you get a message informing you need to obtain a ship with a 21LY grav jump range.
If you haven’t been focusing on spaceships and ranking up your Piloting skill in Starfield, this can be a difficult requirement to meet. You aren’t left completely helpless, however, and there are a few ways to overcome the problem.
What are you being asked to do?
To travel between planets and solar systems, you’ll obviously need a spaceship. It would take too long to travel across space using conventional methods, so you’ll have to make grav jumps. This essentially allows you to warp through space, allowing you to cover large distances almost instantly.
To make longer grav jumps, there are two main routes. The first is to upgrade your Astrodynamics skill, which will increase your grav jump range regardless of what spaceship you’re on. The second option, which we’ll discuss next, is to obtain a new ship.
How to purchase a ship with a 21LY or higher grav jump range in Starfield
When it comes to obtaining the right kind of ship, you have a few options. The most obvious is to simply purchase one, which you can do by visiting a Ship Service Technician. If you’re in New Atlantis, the cheapest ship you’ll find that has an appropriate grav jump range is the Rambler. If you still can’t afford it, try selling some of your trips, completing missions from a mission board, or selling all the junk in your inventory.
How to get a free ship with a 21LY or higher grav jump range in Starfield
There are a couple of instances where you can score an appropriate ship for free. One way to do this is to pick the Kid Stuff trait when making a character, you’ll eventually be able to grab the Wanderwell.
You can also obtain a Kepler R or Kepler S from Stroud-Ecklund. You’ll have to complete the Overdesigned mission for Walter to get this ship. Be warned that you’ll need the appropriate Piloting skills before you’re able to use the ship, though you can obtain it whenever the mission is available.
How to upgrade your ship to have a 21LY or higher grav jump range in Starfield
If you don’t want to get a new ship, you can simply upgrade an existing one, including your Frontier. To do this, head to a Service Ship Technician where you can upgrade your grav drive and fuel talks. If you still don’t have the necessary grav jump range, then you may need to buy a new grav drive altogether.
If you need some ideas when building a new ship, then check out this guide. You can also complete the Mantis quest for a cool new ship, though it won’t have the necessary grav jump range for this mission.
