Fifteen years ago today, on March 31, 1998, the original StarCraft launched on PC, setting in place a series of events that would lead up to the powerhouse it is now: gigantic competitive tournaments, gorgeous singleplayer cutscenes, and one of the biggest modding communities through custom maps.

I can still vividly remember waking up early for school just to get in some time with The Simpsons RPG before heading out to my bus stop. One time I actually managed to get to the end boss, Mr. Burns, as Homer. Problem was, Homer was a Firebat and Mr. Burns was a Guardian. For those out of the loop, the Guardian is a flying unit and the Firebat can only attack ground units. Man, was I bummed!

Anyway, if you want to celebrate StarCraft‘s birthday, you can earn three classic profile portraits on Battle.net by playing any type of online game between today and April 17. Just looking at those portraits now gives me a gigantic rush of nostalgia. I think I have the original StarCraft strategy guide around here somewhere…

You can read all about the anniversary, the portraits, and more over on Blizzard’s blog post.

During the day, he teaches high school kids about history. At night he kicks their butts in competitive games like Rocket League, Dota 2, Overwatch, and Counter-Strike. Disclosure: I've personally backed Double Fine Adventure, Wasteland 2, Dead State, SPORTSFRIENDS, Torment: Tides of Numera, STRAFE, and The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls. I have previously written for AbleGamers.com and continue to support them whenever possible (like HumbleBundle).
