‘PlayStation All-Stars who?’ – says Sony
Leaked e-mails have revealed that Sony Pictures wants to make movies based on various videogame series including many Nintendo properties such as Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, and oddest of all, Super Smash Bros.
Wikileaks has begun hosting the leaked e-mails from last year’s Sony Pictures hack, and some interesting tidbits are starting to surface. It looks like Sony had been trying to court Nintendo to get the rights to do movies based on many of its properties. Other non-Nintendo properties were discussed for films such as Sonic the Hedgehog, BioShock, and Metal Gear Solid. According to the leak, Sony’s own IPs Gran Turismo and Uncharted could show up in theaters as well.
The e-mails also seem to indicate that some kind of deal was landed to produce a Mario-based cartoon, with a picture of Sony Pictures’ producer Avi Arad and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto confirming the rather friendly looking relationship.
Sony also mentioned amiibo, stating they are an “interesting bit on Smash Brothers.” Could you imagine a movie theater exclusive amiibo? The box office wouldn’t be able to hold all that Nintendo money. Records would be shattered.
