Well, damn
Sony has closed Guerrilla Cambridge, the long-running studio behind games like Rigs: Mechanized Combat League for PlayStation VR, Killzone: Mercenary on PS Vita, and even MediEvil, among others.
In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony said the decision stemmed from an internal review of projects under SCE Worldwide Studios, which led the company to believe that it would be “necessary to make some changes to the European studios structure” in order to meet its “strategic objectives.”
Killzone and Horizon Zero Dawn developer Guerrilla Games, which is based out of Amsterdam, isn’t going anywhere. Whether others will be affected — either now, or in the future — remains to be seen.
“Whilst we accept that this decision will mean that we risk losing high calibre staff, by focusing on other Studios with exciting new projects in development, (including continued work on PlayStation VR), we believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality to our players,” reads a portion of the statement from Sony.
Disappointing news, to say the least. Rigs is one of the best, most fully-realized PlayStation VR games, and I had been counting on Cambridge to continue making titles for the device. Welp.
