Sonic the Hedgehog is in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD

And now we know which mini-games made the cut

25 years later, I’m still not ready for Sega to give up on the concept behind Sonic Spinball, especially not now that the weirdly good game has found its way back into my life with the Sega Genesis Mini. It’s never going to happen, I’m sure of it, but I can hope. Realistically, the closest thing I’m ever going to get is a cameo appearance in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD, the upcoming PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch remaster. Sonic the Hedgehog will reportedly be a playable character in the game.

Sega hasn’t made an announcement about the crossover, but the achievement-tracking site Exophase posted Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD‘s achievements and two of them reference dear old Sonic.

• Way Past Cool: Clear a stage as Sonic the Hedgehog.
• Monkey Business: Change the costumes of all characters except Sonic and clear a stage with each of them.

So yeah. That’s kinda fun!

Notably, the achievement list also details the remaster’s mini-game collection, which is down from 50 games (in the original Wii version) to just 10 mini-games in Banana Blitz HD. Here’s what we’re getting:

• Monkey Snowboard
• Hammer Throw
• Monkey Target
• Slingshot
• Space Monkey Attack
• Hovercraft Race
• Seesaw Ball
• Dangerous Route
  
• Whack-a-Mole

Bowling, Baseball, and Monkey Target make up my Top Three for the Super Monkey Ball series, but if I had to pick only one to make it into this remaster, I’d definitely go with Target. It’s a true classic.

Banana Blitz HD is out October 29 for consoles and later this winter for PC.
