Sonic Superstars: How to unlock Last Story and the true final boss fight

About the same, but with a twist.

It’s typical in many classic-style Sonic games: Gathering all the Chaos Emeralds awards you with one last, secret battle. Sonic Superstars naturally follows suit with a true final boss fight, and the ‘Last Story’ you need for it is unlocked in the usual way — with one small hurdle.

Any Sonic fan worth their salt will accurately guess that finding all seven Chaos Emeralds is paramount to getting that coveted true ending. They’re right. But Sonic Superstars is a bit more demanding. Getting all the Emeralds is merely one step in a multi-stage journey to unlock the Last Story chapter in Sonic Superstars.

Sonic Superstars‘ final boss battle unlocks after you beat the game twice

Here’s what you need to do to play Last Story and the true final boss fight of Sonic Superstars:

  • Complete Story Mode, which unlocks Trip as a playable character along with Trip’s Story
  • Complete Trip’s Story
  • Collect all seven Chaos Emeralds, which unlocks Super Sonic and other Super forms
    • This can be done while playing Story Mode or during Trip’s Story since Emerald completion transfers over

Once you finish the three steps, Last Story will appear in the game’s menu. You play as Super Sonic, who faces off against the game’s greatest foe: A big, purple dragon.

Wait, what? Right. So, I don’t recall a big dragon being a major plot point in the game, but here we are. The true final boss of Sonic Superstars is a dragon who just kind of showed up. Oh, well. Weirder things have happened in this franchise.

You might Trip on this hurdle

It’s not as easy as I make it sound, mind. Trip’s Story stars the adorable sungazer lizard as she races through the story missions while fighting the Egg Robo and Fang (instead of Eggman). The levels are much more challenging, featuring changes that take advantage of Trip’s double jump and wall-clinging abilities. There are also more enemies, spikes, and a different final boss encounter. And I’ve been playing games for decades, but that last fight against Fang really kicked my ass. If you’re going for the true final boss of Sonic Superstars, you may swear the title belongs to him.
