One of the best parts of booting up a new fighter in Super Smash Bros. is plopping them into the Kid Icarus level with Pit and hearing the (typically) hilarious fourth-wall-breaking Palutena rant.

In case you haven’t tried this (now staple, as of Smash 4) mechanic, the gist is that by initiating Pit’s “Smash Taunt” (an Easter egg taunt) on the Palutena’s Temple stage, the game will bring up a dialogue box where Pit’s mentor Palutena will attempt to educate the boy on his foe, in the style of Kid Icarus: Uprising. It’s one of those things that sounds dumb, but is actually incredible in practice: even the Piranha Plant had a particularly amusing Palutena’s Guidance rant that was interrupted by Kid Icarus‘ Viridi. Sadly, future DLC characters seemingly won’t have this extra.

In a 20th anniversary column for the series in the latest issue of Famitsu, Sakurai says that starting with Joker, characters won’t get Palutena’s Guidance dialogue. No reason was given for the decision, but it falls in line with what happened initially with Smash 4 (they were given their day in Ultimate): it could just be a lot of extra work on what is already a taxing months-long process.
