Sink your gold for a good cause

Players of RuneScape can now donate their in-game gold into the “Well of Goodwill,” which the game’s developer Jaxex will then turn into real-world money to donate to charity. Jagex will donate $1 for every ten million gold that players donate. Charities that will benefit from this include the Willow Foundation, SpecialEffect, Action for Kids, GamesAid, and The Internet Watch Foundation.

As well as benefiting charity, the gold donation serves as a gold sink to help out the economy. I’m not just saying that — right on the page for this Jagex comes out and says “The Well of Goodwill will also act as a massive gold sink for the game: something we promised with the launch of Bonds, and which will have a huge impact on improving the game’s economy.”

It seems a little bit like a lazy way to fix a game’s broken economy, but if it helps kids I guess we’ll let them get away with it.
