According to a report from VGC, development is already underway on a remake of Capcom’s horror classic Resident Evil 4, following on from the success of recent remakes Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. The new project is supposedly in development at studio M-Two, with a scheduled release year of 2022.

M-Two, founded just last year by PlatinumGames’ former president Tatsuya Minami, provided support work on recent release Resident Evil 3, but are expected to be leading the charge on Resident Evil 4. Shinji Mikami, co-creator of the franchise, is reportedly not working on the project, but has given it his blessing, offering “informal advice” on the game’s direction.

Originally released for the GameCube in 2005, Resident Evil 4 redefined the zombie-popping series, famously telling players to “forget everything they know about Survival Horror.” It tells the story of government agent Leon Kennedy, who travels to a grim countryside village in Spain on a mission to rescue the President’s daughter, Ashley Graham, kidnapped by the bizarre doomsday cult, Los Illuminados.

With a new over-the-shoulder viewpoint, claustrophobic and intense combat, and cinematic boss battles, Resident Evil 4 would reinvent Capcom’s beloved franchise, offering a gameplay style that the franchise would adopt for many years afterward. Resident Evil 4 would eventually be ported and re-released time and again on multiple platforms, and is still considered by many to be one of the greatest video games ever made.

The Resident Evil universe is currently awash with whispered stories. These new Resident Evil 4 remake rumors come hot on the heels of last week’s story about Resident Evil 8, which – according to “insider” Dusk Golem – is returning to first-person gameplay and will see the light of day sometime in 2021.
