Rumor: PS3 hacked into real service mode

This could be fake, but some pictures coming out of the PS3 hacking community look like they’ve accessed a real PS3 service mode. In the above screenshot it looks like there’s an on-screen overlay that says “FactoryService Mode.” There’s still no word on what this does, but it may be possible to do PS3 firmware downgrades and such.

I’m open to anything that busts open the silly regional protection. My dream? Someone can bust open the protection on my first generation PS3 so that I may insert any of my Japanese PS1, PS2 and PS3 games and play them freely and easily.

We’ll keep our ears to the ground to see how this pans out.
