Once again, Nintendo wants to pump (clap) you up
Nintendo has a long and storied history of trying to get its fan base to get their asses off the couch and start moving. From its acquisition of the Power Pad in the ’80s to the incredibly popular Wii Fit and this year’s Fitness Boxing, its catalog is filled with noble attempts at trying to convince fans that physical fitness is just as important as beating the next dungeon in The Legend of Zelda. Its latest attempt hits stores next month in the form of Ring Fit Adventure
Rather than give players a fitness game that plays like a fitness game, Ring Fit Adventure disguises exercise as a grand adventure. Using the Ring-Con and Leg-Strap accessories, you’ll run down narrow paths, blast boxes for bonuses, and do fitness-themed, turn-based battles with monsters. To detail everything you need to know about the game, Nintendo has released this seven-minute trailer overview trailer.
Weirdly intense-looking gentleman aside, this actually looks like it might be fun. The last fitness game I had that used a leg-strap was EA Sports Active NFL Training Camp, and that game legitimately helped me lose weight in ways Wii Fit Plus or Personal Trainer: Walking never could. Hopefully there will be an option to replace the in-game fitness guides with the Wii Fit Trainers, now that they’re Smash celebrities and all.
Ring Fit Adventure launches on October 18 exclusively for Nintendo Switch. It will retail for $79.99.
