Learn to fly
“Revered. Exalted. Wise. These are the traits of your fellow owls.” That’s how the launch trailer for Owlboy begins. It’s especially cutting because Otus, the titular owlboy, is considered none of these by his peers. He’s a dunce, a mistake, a loser.
Early on, Otus sets out on a mission to save his village. But, it feels like that’s a secondary priority. Proving himself to the community and to the teacher who inexplicably hates him feels more important. Whether or not that happens is anyone’s guess. However, this trailer would have you believe that his journey is grand regardless of the outcome.
Admittedly, I’m not that far into Owlboy — maybe three of nine hours or so. I can see the underpinnings of greatness, though. In our official review, Patrick gave Owlboy a perfect 10 that was brimming with praise like “I could spend forever talking about moments, both little and big, that occur in Owlboy that are just so smart, but it’s better just to experience them for yourself.” So far, I’m inclined to agree. But, like Patrick said, you should maybe just experience it for yourself.
