Once Upon a Pixel is my favorite gaming related video series on the internet. Unlike most shows about games and gamers, Once Upon a Pixel never goes for the cheap laugh or the unwarranted misappropriation of the source material. You wont see Sonic as a potty-mouthed lout or Mario as a blood thirsty maniac here. Although that kind of “kid friendly characters get mean and gross” comedy almost always gets a laugh, it rarely has much to say. With Once Upon a Pixel, Ashley and Anthony clearly wanted more than that. Sure the show is funny, but it’s also a smart, heartfelt, and most importantly, genuine love letter to gaming.
That’s why I’ll be picking up their series now that it’s on DVD. The bonus features alone make it worth the purchase — commentary from Anthony and Ashley, lessons on drawing your favorite videogame characters from Ashley, and all the art every used from the series ever created.
If that’s not worth a few of your hard earned bucks, I don’t know what is.
