Nioh amazingly lets you choose between visual fidelity and a consistent frame rate

Most games should have this

As someone who speaks on this subject of framerates a lot, I’ll break it down again for people who don’t care. For most games, 30fps, or even sub 30fps, may not even matter. For slow adventure titles, puzzle games, or anything else that doesn’t require precision inputs from the player, a lower framerate is manageable. It might cut down on motion blur and other nauseating effects (especially in VR), but games are generally playable.

But for action titles, especially ones that rely on frame-perfect moments and combos (like the Souls games, or the Devil May Cry series), a consistent 60fps framerate is desirable. Having the game slow down or blur during a moment where a crucial dodge or combo is required, forcing an untimely death, isn’t a fun gameplay experience. Some people enjoy a lower framerate as a “cinematic experience” — which is fine — but it causes problems for many players.

Thankfully, the folks over at Team Ninja have allowed options for both mindsets in the recent Nioh demo. You can opt for a “movie mode,” which results in better visuals, or an “action mode” that sports a smoother framerate. Whether this will be included in the final version is yet to be seen, but I love that it’s there, and would placate both hardcore and casual action fans alike. In fact, I can see myself using both in my playthrough, swapping to action mode when facing off against bosses.
