Nioh 2 is slicing and dicing yokai on March 13, 2020

Get a taste with the open beta this Friday

Nioh 2 looks like a heap of more Nioh, and while some people are going to expect substantial changes, I’m happy as is. The original game was mostly there. More ghostly monsters to fight, a full-on character creator, and a new ability (Yokai Shift) to change forms mid-combat that’s enough to reel me in.

Just ahead of the Nioh 2 open beta, which runs from November 1 to November 10, Team Ninja has put out a fresh release date trailer. The sequel is planning to launch for PS4 on March 13, 2020.

Cool.

But also, have mercy on us.

If you end up trying the Nioh 2 beta with Nioh save data on your PS4, you can play as our boy William. That’s a nice little perk but, to be honest, I spent most of my time in the original game disguised as Tachibana Ginchiyo. Maybe I’ll still go through the beta as William, though for old time’s sake.

Besides offering access to the Interim (a training area), there’s also a playable stage, Sunomata, based on the real-world Japanese castle of the same name. Players who clear the beta will earn The Mark of The Demon Slayer, which unlocks the Kamaitachi Helmet in the full game. I love it when they do that.

Not so coincidentally, you’ll be able to pick up Nioh through PlayStation Plus in November.
