The power of robot gods and anime
It looks like Nier: Automata is next in line for an animated adaptation. Square Enix announced last night that a Nier: Automata anime is on the way.
Details are scarce right now as to where the adaptation will be created. Anime production company Aniplex did boost the news on their socials, but it doesn’t look like a studio’s been formally announced yet.
While production details are scarce, we did get a brief teaser. It shows off one of, and arguably the ‘main,’ protagonist 2B, alongside her pod. And the animation style in the teaser alone is already pretty rad.
There’s also a website up for the project, though it doesn’t have any further details or hints. It does have some more gorgeous art in the background, though.
News of the anime came as part of the 5th anniversary celebration for Nier: Automata. It’s been five years since the story of 2B, A2, and 9S first launched, and it’s been a top contender in the RPG scene ever since. Even in a year that was stacked with excellent games, Nier: Automata‘s story of despair, hope, destiny, and determination holds up.

Seeing that story animated out could be pretty cool, if it’s pulled off well. There have been plenty of so-so anime adaptations of video games, but Nier: Automata has enough style, story, and substance to be a good foundation for something. If nothing else, the fights should be fun to watch. Someone get Ufotable on the phone.
We’ll hopefully learn more about the Nier: Automata anime sometime soon. In the meantime, Square Enix also confirmed that upcoming action RPG Babylon’s Fall will get some Nier: Automata content too.
