As part of the investor call held yesterday by CD Projekt RED, the studio noted its continuing interest in its high-fantasy franchise The Witcher — Not only did the Polish developer announce that pre-production had already begun, but also suggested that the as-yet-untitled release is expected to kick off an entirely new “saga” set within the sex-and-monster-filled universe.
During the call, CDPR CEO Adam KiciÅ„ski was asked to elaborate further on his use of the word “saga” to describe the new title, which is currently in its pre-production stage. KiciÅ„ski then explains that CDPR sees the first three Witcher titles, (The Witcher, Assassins of Kings, and Wild Hunt), as presenting a single saga within Geralt’s world, while the new title will be the first chapter of a whole new arc.
It remains to be seen which lands, heroes, enemies, and narratives are set to make an appearance in the new games, but one can expect CDPR to give it their all with the new release — given the huge interest in The Witcher property following the globally successful Netflix series. In addition, CDPR will likely be looking to repolish its reputation, which took one hell of a ding in the aftermath of the Cyberpunk 2077 launch. CDPR had previously been viewed as something of a “can do no wrong” studio to many — a prestige that the developer will be looking to reclaim.
Of course, we are some years out from our return to the digital iteration of The Continent, so Witcher fans will, unfortunately, have to sit in their local tavern and Gwent it out until Geralt of Rivia (or whomever) is finally ready to draw their swords and venture into the great unknown once more.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is scheduled to launch on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X in 2022.
