As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Sony and Legendary Entertainment are looking to bring a new live-action Street Fighter movie to screens on March 20, 2026.
It sounds like a bad idea to me. We’ve been down this street before, and aside from Raul Julia’s incredible performance as M. Bison, things haven’t turned out great. Do you remember 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li? Me neither.
There isn’t a whole lot of information around about the contents of the film, script or otherwise. Danny and Michael Philippou were initially going to direct but had to drop out due to scheduling issues. There’s no word on whether or not this is going to be based on a specific entry of the franchise or who will be starring in it, only that it will be live-action.
With the overwhelming success of the Super Mario Bros. movie, as well as some victories on the small screen, it’s no surprise that other studios are looking to see what else can be adapted. The comic book well is looking like it’s drying up, so executives are looking elsewhere for lucre.
Street Fighter has always struck me as a weird choice for live-action. The games don’t have an exactly solid or memorable story and are mostly just weird muscle-dudes throwing fire at one another. The 1994 film hit when the series was at the height of its popularity, and while I don’t think it was a failure, it didn’t make a huge splash, either. I’m serious about Raul Julia, though. I could watch a compilation of his scenes all day, every day.
But I will concede that it could work with the right people behind it.
