Minecraft has sold over 22 million copies on PC and Mac

That’s a ridiculous amount of sales

Minecraft has officially shifted over 22 million copies for PC and Mac.

In the last 24 hours, 13,000 copies of the game have been sold, and so we’re roughly looking at a million sales every three months for a game that was officially released four years ago.

These numbers don’t include the many console and handheld versions, where it’s also seen massive success, but only the original game available on the official website. Minecraft is still big as hell.

Just to put 22 million into perspective:

  • It’s more than the populations of Sri Lanka, Romania, Chile, the Netherlands, Zimbabwe, Equador, Belgium, Bolivia, Greece, the Czech Republic, Portugal,  Sweden or Switzerland.
  • If one copy were sold per day, it would take 60 thousand years to sell 22 million copies. 60 thousand years ago was the later Stone Age.
  • Assuming your standard game box is 19 cm long, if you lay each copy end-to-end, the trail of boxes would run for 4,180 kilometers (2,597 miles). That’s only 90 miles short of the width of the continental United States, and you’d be able to run the length of the UK three times over.

So yeah, Minecraft is still doing pretty damn well for itself.
