Microsoft and Square are both happy with Rise of the Tomb Raider

Neither seem concerned by low sales

While official sales data for Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One is still not publicly available, numbers being unofficially thrown around for the timed exclusive have suggested that it’s currently selling incredibly poorly. Releasing as a console exclusive on the same day as Fallout 4 certainly didn’t help their sales figures.

In spite of rumoured poor sales, Rise of the Tomb Raider director Brian Horton says that both Square Enix and Microsoft are pleased with the game itself.

Speaking on TombRaiderForums.com, Horton said:

I didn’t mean to go off topic or patronise, but there was suggestion in the thread that the reported sales numbers reflect poorly on the dev team.

Square/Microsoft are happy with Crystal and Eidos Montreal and the game itself. As to the topic of sales, I’m unqualified to discuss it so I won’t have anything else to say on this thread.

Microsoft and Square are very happy with Rise and the dev team, thanks for the concerns. Crystal and Eidos Montreal made a game we are proud of and we appreciate the overwhelming number of positive reviews and fan feedback.

So, regardless of how sales have panned out it seems Microsoft and Square Enix seem happy with how Rise of the Tomb Raider turned out. I can only assume Microsoft is happy about positive critical and fan reception, with Square Enix happy about the boat load of money they were paid for timed exclusivity.
