Nintendo released a patch today
[Update: There’s a fix for the map-marker-related crash in Metroid Dread with Ver. 1.0.1. The update also fixes “several other issues to improve overall gameplay experience.”]
So a few first-party Nintendo games have had game-breaking or crash-starting bugs. Zelda: Skyward Sword HD went through this recently, and now, it’s Metroid Dread. Thankfully these are generally sprung under esoteric circumstances, but Nintendo is taking a more proactive approach here with this Metroid Dread bug.
It’s actually a fairly straightforward bug that many people aren’t going to experience, but needs to be addressed all the same. Regarding the bug, here’s Nintendo’s statement on Twitter:
“A bug has been found in Metroid Dread that can prevent players from progressing under a certain condition. A patch will be released by the end of October to fix this. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
In a rare move, Nintendo also fully acknowledges the bug in a customer support post, detailing the circumstances around it:
“Near the end of the game, if the player destroys a door while a map marker for that specific door is displayed on the map, the game will forcibly close and the following message will appear: “The software was closed because an error occurred.”
Having completed it, I didn’t encounter this bug myself, but given that I hadn’t really heard of it happening until this was brought to my attention, that makes sense. It’s great that Nintendo is aware of it, and seemingly, so long as you remove map markers from doors, you should be OK after you go back into your file post-crash. It could have been so much worse!
