Player Toxicity Expected
Funcom has released a new trailer for its upcoming doomsday shooter Metal: Hellsinger — the new video features the unmistakable vocals of Serj Tankian, long-time frontman of metal band System of a Down. Tankian joins a roster of metal legends that will soundtrack the next-gen shooter’s violent chaos.
“What can you even say! We have so many System of a Down fans in the studio, adding Serj Tankian to our already incredible roster of vocalists feels unreal,” said David Goldfarb of developer The Outsiders. “He completely killed the track and made it his own in a way only Serj could. We are so excited and can’t wait to see everyone playing!”
As FPS fans will immediately note, Metal: Hellsinger features the typically apocalyptic vibe of the genre’s roots, founded in titles such as Doom, Hexen, Quake, and Heretic. In a fun new twist on the classic first-person gameplay, however, players will be rewarded for their ability to run ‘n’ gun to the beat of the game’s bass-pounding score, chaining together combos and meaty acts of destruction in time with the music — a gimmick similarly explored to solid effect in 2021 release BPM: Bullets per Minute.
Tankian joins a horn-throwing roster of composers that already includes Arch Enemy’s Alissa White-Gluz, Trivium’s Matt Heafy, and the dulcet tones of Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe. More artists are expected to be announced in the near future. It feels as though Mike Patton should most definitely be here, but the Faith No More/Fantomas frontman is currently taking a well-earned sabbatical from work, so that may just be wishful thinking on my part.
Metal: Hellsinger is currently in development for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X.
