Most popular Mega Man game soundtrack was not given the proper treatment
Any debate over the best Classic series Mega Man soundtrack typically boils down to MM2 and MM3. Both games sport some of the best music on the NES, but when push comes to shove, MM2 will edge out ever so slightly in a popularity contest. Such a masterpiece deserves a high-quality album release; sadly, it still hasn’t received one.
A week back, Capcom uploaded the Mega Man 1 OST to its online store, and now it has done the same for Mega Man 2. These albums are ripped directly from the Rockcan, a Japan-only physical collection of the Mega Man 1-10 soundtracks plus extras. Namely, the CDs for 1-6 contain both the original NES music as well as the arranged tunes heard in the Complete Works PS1 re-releases and a few other arrangements by Capcom’s in-house band, Alph Lyla. Slowly but surely, these are being made available digitally for US fans.
I of course own the Rockcan and can vouch for the quality of almost everything in the tin. The big black mark — and boy, is it an ugly one — is that the MM2 NES tracks were recorded improperly, introducing a whole mess of audio hiccups that sound absolutely dreadful. MM3 and onward are pitch perfect, so what could have happened here? I would hate for any of you to spend $8.95 on this and be disappointed.
But the MM2 Complete Works soundtrack is included, so there’s that at least.
