Much like the fluctuating movie franchise in general, Star Wars video games have had their peaks and valleys. After a few positive releases including Jedi: Fallen Order and Squadrons, I’m cautiously hopeful the upward trend will carry into 2021 with Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga – and even beyond.
In a blast from the past, the Lucasfilm Games branding is mounting a comeback. Well, kind of.
It’s not the same situation as before Disney came into the picture – Lucasfilm Games won’t suddenly start dreaming up in-house Star Wars games like it did decades ago – but the brand is being refreshed.
Going forward, Lucasfilm Games will be the “official identity for all gaming titles from Lucasfilm.”
To be clear, the current strategy is still in effect: Star Wars games will be “developed in collaboration with the finest studios across the industry.” In other words, EA seemingly isn’t going anywhere. You’ll be able to keep tabs on future Lucasfilm Games happenings on Twitter and Facebook, if you like.
I can’t help but wonder if the smash success of The Mandalorian has opened up any doors – doors that shouldn’t have been closed in the first place – with respect to who can work on what, and when. The sheer potential of Star Wars in gaming is invigorating and frustrating all at once. It’s beyond untapped.
I’m longing for the days when something like Shadows of the Empire could get made.
