The power of Eikons, inside a PS5
Summons are a key component of Final Fantasy, and Final Fantasy XVI centers its story and tale around those who can bring them to bear. Eikons are the powerful summons of Final Fantasy XVI, and there’s a cadre of warriors who can utilize their powers, dubbed Dominants.
As the player proceeds through Final Fantasy XVI, they can obtain the power of these Eikonic beings for Clive. And through that, Clive can gain new moves and forms, to do even more damage on the field.
So naturally, you might be wondering: which summons are in Final Fantasy XVI? How many are there, and whose power does Clive get to wield? Well, we’ve got a brief rundown of all the Eikons, just to give you a glimpse at what forces they might bring to the table in your journey through Final Fantasy XVI.
We can’t promise this will be totally spoiler-free, but we’ll do our best to avoid divulging any major plot details or twists that occur over the course of the game. Suffice to say, there are some character information spoilers to follow, so if you don’t want to know who the Eikons are, wait this one out a bit.
Phoenix
One of the first Eikons we see in Final Fantasy XVI, the Phoenix is the Eikon of Fire. The firebird represents the cycle of life and death, and also bears flaming wings.
Its Dominant is Joshua Rosfield, the young heir to the Rosarian throne and Clive’s little brother. While Clive was not chosen by the Eikon, Joshua was, and we get to see just how this bird takes to the skies in one of the opening moments of Final Fantasy XVI. Fun fact: While phoenixes had appeared in the game prior, Phoenix only became a summonable creature in Final Fantasy V.
Ifrit
In the intro, we also get to see Ifrit, a mainstay of Final Fantasy summons. Not much is known about Ifrit’s appearance at the outset; there is only supposed to be one Eikon of every element, yet here we see two of fire. Ifrit and Phoenix clash, and what happens from there? Well, I’ll let you, the player, discover.
Ifrit is pretty sick though, and brings many of its classic moves to bear, including Hellfire.
Garuda
The Eikon of Wind is Garuda, a harpy creature with fangs, feathers, and a whole lot of means for flaying its opponents. Garuda controls Wind, or Aero, magic, and can also summon tornados and other catastrophes associated with the breeze.
Garuda’s Dominant is Benedikta Harman, who carefully navigates the geopolitical tensions of Valisthea.
Ramuh
Most Eikons are towering creatures of immense proportion, but Ramuh? Just an old dude with a big ol’ staff. Ramuh returns in Final Fantasy XVI with all the sound and fury of the heavens, raining down lightning.
Its electrifying Dominant is none other than Cidolfus Telamon, a.k.a. Cid. While Ramuh’s got a weird look going on (beard tucked into shirt is a bold look), it’s a fun pairing.
Shiva
Is Final Fantasy XVI a Final Fantasy? Yes. Does it have an ice elemental summon? Yes. If both are yes, chances are we’re seeing Shiva take to the field. The snow queen returns as an Eikon in Final Fantasy XVI, bringing down a cascade of ice and chills.
Her Dominant is Jill Warrick, a childhood friend of Clive’s that he’s reunited with at the start of the story.
Titan
When it comes down to the dirt and grime, call on Titan. The big, powerful bruiser of an Eikon is one of the more imposing summons in Final Fantasy history, and he shows up here as an Eikon in Final Fantasy XVI. While he can mess around with boulders and granite, Titan’s one true-calling is punching things very, very hard.
Fittingly, his Dominant is Hugo Kupka, the brawny pseudo-head of the Dhalmekian Republic.
Bahamut
Carrying the title of Most Imposing Dragon in Final Fantasy‘s wide library of dragons, Bahamut does not disappoint as an Eikon in Final Fantasy XVI. Not content to breath an element like fire or ice, instead Bahamut launches a barrage of light energy in the form of Megaflare, a signature ability of sorts. It’s like the fighter jet of Final Fantasy summons.
Dion Lesage is Bahamut’s Dominant, making for a nice pairing of holy paladin and radiant dragon.
Odin
The horse-riding knight remains an enigma for a large chunk of Final Fantasy XVI. We know his Dominant is King Barnabas of Waloed. We know he wields a sword that can cut just about anything. And that, somehow, Odin’s horse can fly. Or gallop on the air. I’m really not sure how it works, but it looks cool.
Either way, Odin is a terrifying mystery, and it’s best to stay clear of the business end of his sword.
