I may or may not have let out an audible “Holy sh*t!” while watching this trailer for The Forest, a first-person survival horror game looking for support on Steam Greenlight. Not because of a jump scare, mind you — it happened when I realized this really is a survival game complete with tree chopping and structure building. Oh, and there’s creepy mutants lurking about, too.

Days in The Forest will be spent preparing for nights, which is naturally when the monsters come out. They should consider restructuring their sleep cycles. SKS Games says stealth is an option, or players can “engage them directly with crude weapons built from sticks and stones.”

What I’m most excited about here is that, seemingly, the horror in The Forest is not a constant, oppressive force; tension can outstay its welcome to a point where it becomes ineffective. Rather, it appears that SKS is keeping pacing in mind. The developers have cited The Descent and Cannibal Holocaust as sources of inspiration. Yes, this deserves a spot on my radar.
