Yup, they’re still making a Sonic movie

Every time I hear news about the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, I have to remind myself that yes, this is actually a thing that’s happening. The movie was greenlit for a 2019 release date, and now we have more concrete details on who may be playing Dr. Eggman, and it’s could be none other than Jim Carrey.

On paper, it makes sense to cast Jim Carrey. He’s a larger than life actor and when he’s able to ham it up, he can ham it up like nobody else. Just look at Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber, and The Grinch. All of them are great movies because of Jim Carrey’s awesome performance, but keep in mind that those movies were nearly two decades ago. Sure he’s still a fine actor, but he’s not the man he used to be. He’s more interested in dramatic fare now, so fingers crossed he still has that magic in him.

Also, how the movie uses Eggman is going to really determine how good Carrey could be. If the directors want to make Eggman more comedic like the Sonic Boom TV show, I think we have nothing to worry about. If they try to make Eggman a serious threat that’s less comedic like in Sonic SATAM, then we may have some issues. I’ll need to see a trailer before I’m officially sold on Jim Carrey if he is cast and even then it’ll take me quite a lot to get on board with the blue blur starring in his own feature-length film.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is set for release November 25th, 2019.
