The world of Cyberpunk 2077 saw a resurgence in popularity after launch, thanks in no part to the highly acclaimed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The animated prequel introduced folks to a fascinating new group of characters. Lucy, one of the eponymous Edgerunners, notably made a splash, and it left some wondering if she was still alive somewhere in Cyberpunk 2077.
As the deuteragonist next to David Martinez, Lucy became a fan favorite among viewers. This left Edgerunners viewers and Cyberpunk 2077 players with a shared question: does the net-runner with a big attitude and a bigger dream show up in Cyberpunk 2077?
Is Lucy alive in Cyberpunk 2077?
Early in the show, Lucy makes it crystal clear that she has one desire: to visit the moon, one of the few places that urbanization, capitalism, and corruption haven’t overrun. As an orphan experimented on by the powerful Arasaka corporation, Lucy has, to put it mildly, lost interest in Earth and wants to go somewhere where all the problems in the world look and feel small.
Her dream changed when she met and slowly fell in love with David Martinez, but only slightly; she still wanted to walk on the lunar landscape, but now, she wanted to do it with him by her side. The two even live out a virtual projection of this dream in the anime’s second episode, “Like a Boy.” Sadly, she never gets the chance.
From here on, we’ll be diving into Edgerunners spoilers, so keep that in mind before continuing.
In the show’s last episodes, the Edgerunners’ fixer, Faraday, betrays the gang and kidnaps Lucy, hoping to sell her and David to the Arasaka Corporation. Desperate to save her, David loads himself into an experimental cyberskeleton and launches an all-out assault on Arasaka’s headquarters. While he saves Lucy, the Sandevistan chip in his brain finally sends him into full-blown cyber-psychosis.
Sharing one last tender moment with Lucy before his insanity claims him, David sacrifices himself to keep Arasaka’s enforcer, Adam Smasher, at bay so Lucy can escape. Free from a job she did for Arasaka before things went sideways, Lucy finally gets to live her dream on the moon. Unfortunately, she has to do it alone.
Lucy is still alive, but she’s not in Cyberpunk 2077
The ending of Edgerunners is more bitter than bittersweet, but it was nice to see Lucy survive long enough to see her dream become a reality. Since the series ended with her alive, many fans hoped they’d see her appear in Cyberpunk 2077. When the game got a ton of Edgerunner-themed content on the 2.0 patch, fans got their wish. Kind of.
If you go to the Columbarium on the East Side of Night City, you’ll find messages written to David, his mother Gloria and other members of Lucy’s gang who bit the dust throughout Edgerunners. While it’s never officially confirmed that Lucy wrote these messages, it’s hard to think of anyone else who would have written them.
Even though Lucy never appears in Cyberpunk 2077, these messages confirm that she’s still alive, hacking cars and raising hell across Night City. Whether she’s found a new dream isn’t clear, but it is plain to see that the memories of her found family are keeping her going strong.
