Is David Martinez from Edgerunners in Cyberpunk 2077?

You can find his jacket, but what about the rest?

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was quite a surprise when it arrived on Netflix back in 2022. Compared to the disaster that was the Cyberpunk 2077 launch, the game’s animated adaptation thrived right from the start. It introduced a new cast of likable characters, led by the young David Martinez who seemed to be a magnet for bad luck. David Martinez certainly made a name for himself outside of the game, but did he ever hop from Edgerunners to Cyberpunk 2077?

Developer CD Projekt Red was clearly confident in Edgerunners. The company added DLC equipment, such as David’s jacket, into Cyberpunk 2077 with update 1.6 (aka, the Edgerunners Update). References to the show were added to the game, letting fans of both stories enjoy the new connective threads.

Did the Edgerunners update add David Martinez to Cyberpunk 2077?

If you haven’t watched Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, be warned we are now straying into some heavy spoilers. The update may have added references and David’s jacket to Cyberpunk 2077, but it did not include the man himself. Edgerunners is canonically a story prequel of sorts, taking place a year before the game. Following the death of his mother, David went through heavy cyberware modification and joined a group of Edgerunners. Now a mercenary powered by military tech, David made a name for himself.

Unfortunately, David’s body wasn’t equipped for his ill-gotten gear. He began suffering symptoms of cyberpsychosis, which worsened every time he used his abilities. David died before the show’s end, taken down by none other than Adam Smasher. He never got his chance to make it into the game.

Will the story of Edgerunners continue?

It’s hard to say where the characters of Edgerunners will end up. Save for Adam Smasher, they aren’t a part of the game’s story. And even though it was a smash success, neither Netflix nor CD Projekt Red seem eager to continue the series. For now, David’s legacy will only live on in jacket form. To be fair, it is a sweet jacket.
