While we’ve seen some less-than-ideal ports across all platforms this generation, the PlayStation 3 in particular sticks out as the system that often gets the short end of the stick. In case you had any concern about how Irrational Games is handling BioShock Infinite, technical director Chris Kline has your answers.
In a forum post, he outlined a number of steps that are being taken to avoid any possible weirdness between the three versions of Infinite. “Instead of declaring a ‘lead platform’ and porting the game to the others, we’ve instead changed the game engine so that all platforms look (to a programmer) more like a PS3.”
“Writing code this way is more difficult for us,” he continues, “but has a key advantage: it’s both optimal for the PS3 *and* gives speed improvements on other platforms due to increased cache coherence and more efficient use of multiple processing units.”
That’s an interesting solution, for sure. It sounds as if Irrational is stepping up its QA efforts as well. BioShock Infinite, running well on all platforms? I like the sound of that.
