How to unlock Legends in Apex Legends

There are two ways to unlock a new Legend in the game

Apex Legends, the battle royale game, is unlike Fortnite and PUBG, in the sense that the characters in Apex do not exist solely for a cosmetic effect, as each Legend possesses a number of abilities and skills making them unique. Beyond the 1v1s, and how good players are at first-person shooters, there is a lot of room for players to alter the playing field and change the outcome of a fight solely based on the abilities of a Legend.

With that said, it is a key part of a new player in Apex Legends to try and unlock multiple Legends to decide which character suits their playstyle best. New Apex Legends players start out with six free characters, which represent the OG squad from when Apex Legends arrived in 2019. That roster has expanded rapidly since, and there are currently 26 Legends in the game.

With a limited roster of Bangalore, Bloodhound, Gibraltar, Lifeline, Pathfinder, and Wraith to choose from, players do have to wait for quite a while before they can start playing with other Legends in battle royale matches.

There are two ways to unlock Apex Legends characters for players, one of them is the instant way of spending money to get Apex Coins in the game. The alternative method is to level up and gain Legend Tokens to eventually unlock a Legend.

How to unlock characters in Apex Legends using Legend Tokens

Legend Tokens do not have a lot of other use in Apex Legends, apart from unlocking Legends. Players can earn 600 Legend Tokens each time their account reaches a new level. To unlock a new character, players need 12,000 Legend Tokens. This means that you can unlock a Legend, each time you’ve reached 20 new levels on your account.

Once you have 12,000 Legend Tokens, you can head to the ‘Legends Locker’ tab, choose the Legend you want to unlock, and then select the “Unlock with Legend Tokens” choice.

With 20 other legends to unlock, players can unlock all of them by the time their account level reaches level 400. While it currently sounds overwhelming, it is not an impossible task to accomplish. Progressing through the initial levels is relatively simpler, but the key part about unlocking through Legend Tokens is that players do have to play the game consistently and put in a lot of hours.

Many players, including myself, have unlocked all Legends in the game without having to spend money to unlock them, so it is certainly possible to opt for that route.

The other route is through Apex Coins, which is the game’s premium currency. This currency is used to open Apex Packs, buy the Battle Pass, and can also be used to unlock Legends instantly. Unlocking a Legend requires 750 Apex Coins, and it can be quite a costly affair to unlock them all using just Apex Coins.

However, if players are sure of which few Legends they want to play with, Apex Coins can be a viable choice while players can continue playing with these Legends and unlock the rest with Legend Tokens as they progress in the game.

Players can purchase Apex Coins by heading to the in-game store, and they will see the Apex Coins counter at the top right of the screen. Choose the Apex Coins prompt, and it will redirect you to a purchase screen where you can buy Apex Coins. You can also purchase Apex Coins by visiting the official Apex Legends Store page.

After you purchase Apex Coins, you can unlock a Legend by heading to the Legends Locker tab and selecting a Legend you wish to unlock. Now, choose the “Unlock with Apex Coins” option. The Legend will then be unlocked and become playable instantly.
