How to switch characters in Alan Wake 2

Before delving into the mechanics of switching characters, it’s important to familiarize yourself with Saga Anderson and Alan Wake. Saga Anderson is an insightful and decisive FBI agent investigating a murder in the area. On the other hand, Alan Wake is a writer trapped in the Dark Place, a nightmarish dimension he’s been imprisoned for 13 years.

The game features separate chapters for each character, each with its unique storyline. Unlike traditional games, Alan Wake 2 allows you to complete these chapters in any order you prefer. While you may initially want to choose your preferred chapters right from the start, the game doesn’t function that way. To unlock the ability to switch characters, you must first complete the chapter titled “Haunting.” Afterward, you can easily switch between realities in the Janitor’s Break Room.

Once you have completed the introductory chapters of Saga and Alan, after playing for about four to five hours, you will reach a pivotal moment in the story called “Haunting.” At this stage, the game will guide you to the Janitor’s Break Room located in the lodge you are currently in.

To trigger a character switch, you must search for a Janitor’s Bucket. You can also find these in various break rooms throughout the game, including Dark Place and Reality. Once you locate one, simply approach it, and a message will appear prompting you to “Switch Reality.” Interact with it by holding down the designated button (e.g., ‘F’ on PC) to seamlessly switch between controlling Alan and Saga.
